NHRC takes suo motu cognisance of abduction and torture of RTI activist
3 Jan, 2014Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports that a Right to Information (RTI) activist Anoop Singh was allegedly abducted from Dankaur town in Gautam Budh Nagar district on December 13 and tortured, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh (UP) police. The notice has been issued to the Uttar Pradesh police over the slow progress of their investigation in the case.
Anoop Singh is known activist in the area and has filed several RTI petitions, mostly on infrastructure projects, in the past. It was reported in the media that he was abducted and assaulted in Gautam Budh Nagar by the abductors who released him four days later. An FIR has been registered in the case but the local police is purported to be treating the case as a routine affair. Holding that the contents of the media reports, if true, raised serious concerns of human rights violations, the notices were served to the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police and to the Senior Superintendent of Police of Gautam Budh Nagar seeking a report in the issue in two weeks.
