Nearly Rs. 8 crores paid as overtime at PMPML
20 May, 2012Shortage of manpower with the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) is forcing them to make the existing drivers to work overtime. Reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) has revealed that on an average, the drivers collectively put in 32,072 man hours of overtime every month. PMPML has 1,778 drivers on its rolls and 567 drivers on contract. It has paid Rs 3.84 crore to drivers and Rs 3.90 crore to conductors for overtime in the last financial year. It has been alleged that for overtime, as contract employees have to be made lesser payments, PMPML gives most of the overtime work to them.
PMPML has undertaken the drive to recruit more drivers and has started recruiting drivers on contract basis. A batch of about 250 drivers will undergo one-month training in June and will join the staff from July. PMPML plans to hire 250 more drivers soon. PMPML has recently been bought 291 new buses and 209 more will join its fleet by the in a couple of months.
