More than Rs. 300 crore of dues Ludhiana MC pending with defaulters
12 Jan, 2013The reply to an application filed with the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that the local body is under tremendous financial pressure for completing its developmental projects as it is yet to recover over Rs. 300 crore from the defaulters.
In the reply, the municipal corporation has stated that over Rs. 320 Crore are pending against defaulters to its various branches. The data provided in the reply suggests that the water and sewerage branch is yet to realize around Rs. 180 crore from the defaulters. The building branch has an amount of about Rs. 5 Crore pending against defaulters whereas the amount for house tax wing is Rs. 111 Crore. Defaulters also owe nearly Rs. 24 Crore to the octroi branch.
The reply stated that as the dues are pending for past several years, exact date of the defaulted money cannot be ascertained. Meanwhile, the applicant has filed a complaint with the principal secretary of the local bodies department for fast recovery of the dues.
The situation in most local bodies would be similar in the country.
