Maharashtra leads in the number of RTI activists killed in the country
27 Mar, 2014
Mr. Ratnakar Gaikwad
State Chief Information Commissioner,
Government of Maharashtra
Mumbai
Dear Mr. Gaikwad,
Today's news has one more martyr of RTI from our State and it is a matter of great concern that our State leads in the number of RTI activists killed.
As we have written to you in the past whenever such incidents occurred, it needs stringent and fast action to book the culprits and complete the investigation too.
As suggested earlier, kindly access all the RTI applications made by Vilas Dattatreya in the recent past and publish the replies under Section 4 for the benefit of all citizens.
We condemn this dastardly act of eliminating an activist who was using his fundamental right to expose the wrong-doings of those in power and fighting for just and fair practices. He was driven to commit suicide mainly because of the threats to his life and the harassment he was facing, for which the police, according to his suicide note, are mainly responsible.
We trust you will do the needful and take up this matter with the State Government officials and Police too.
Thanking you
Bhaskar Prabhu
