Thousands of Pakistanis & Bangladeshis staying back in India illegally
25 Nov, 2011
India is home to an estimated 72,441 foreign nationals, who are living in the country despite the expiry of their visas. The bulk of these illegal expatriates - nearly 32,644 - come from Bangladesh. This revelation was made by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in reply to a RTI query. Close on the heels of Bangladesh are Afghanistan and Pakistan respectively, with 13,569 and 7,691 nationals from both countries staying on in India beyond their visa deadline. The MHA said it had deported 12,147 foreign nationals, including five Pakistanis and 10,602 Bangladesh citizens, in 2009.
Comments:
These figures are from 2009 and do not represent the current state of affairs. Perhaps, it may not be possible to estimate the total number of such foreign nationals, since their entry into the country is clandestine and surreptitious.
