Government not intending any amendment of RTI Act
2 Dec, 2011The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office V Narayanasamy categorically said in the Lok Sabha in a written reply that the government was not intending to amend the RTI Act. The government appears to be treading a cautious path after the innocuous statement of the Prime Minister during the annual convention of the Central Information Commission in October 2011 was greeted with criticism. He had said that even as we recognise and celebrate the efficacy and the effectiveness of the Right to Information Act, we must take a critical look at it. However, many proposals need to be considered immediately by the government like giving constitutional status to the Central Information Commission; privacy issues under the RTI Act; rising number of appeals with the Commissions; implementation of section 4; errors in drafting of Act etc.
