The Supreme Court had directed the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests to oversee and monitor whether the norms under the Environment Impact Assessment Notification were complied with while granting the clearance to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) for setting up two Russian-made reactors of 1,000 MW each.
In this regard an application was filed with the ministry under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking to get information about the steps taken by the ministry to fulfill the SC directives. The reply from the ministry states that the reports of its officials' visit to Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project site have not been finalized or submitted to any agency till now and any decision in this respect is still to be taken.
The applicant also told that the apex court had ordered the Tamil Nadu government to withdraw all the cases against the agitators so as to maintain peace but the government is yet to withdraw the cases.
