KSRTC runs over 7,700 buses without insurance
An application was filed the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking to get the details about the vehicle insurance of the buses run by the corporation.
The reply, provided by the Accident Division of KSRTC, stated that none of their vehicles, including a fleet of more than 7,700 buses, had third-party or comprehensive insurance. These KSRTC buses run across Karnataka and five other States and one Union Territory. In response to a question as to why insurance was not sought after, the reply stated that the corporation is talking to the insurers.
The applicant stated that the family of a victim of an accident by a KSRTC bus was given a compensation of Rs. 50,000 from the Accident Relief Fund and claimed that if the bus would have been insured the family would have got bigger compensation amount. It is also claimed that with comprehensive insurance policy in place, the victims will be able to get compensation much faster.
