Huge vacancies of teachers in government schools – how would the students study?
22 Jun, 2013An application was filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking to get the details about the number of vacant posts of teachers in the government schools of Mumbai. The reply to the application states that there are 631 posts of teachers lying vacant in government aided schools in the city.
The revelation has raised doubts about the claims of the education department of Maharashtra about maintaining a sound teacher-student ratio. The Right to Education (RTE) Act envisages teacher-pupil ration of 1:30 for lower classes (I-V) and 1:35 for higher classes (VI-VIII).
Also, the information gathered from education officers in the western suburbs, south and central Mumbai shows that many of the schools don’t even have a principal.
However, the education minister of Maharashtra has said that the education department has already approved teachers to many schools across the state and has assured that the shortage of teachers will be tackled soon.
