How many enquiry commissions have been formed since independence?
17 Jun, 2014RTI activist Nutan Thakur filed an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act with the chief secretary and home department of the Uttar Pradesh state government seeking details about various inquiry commissions formed since independence under Section 3 of the Commission of Inquiries Act 1952, their composition and membership, date of formation, increase of time duration and the interim and final reports submitted by them.
The state government has declined to provide the details relating to setting up of commissions of inquiry since independence claiming that the information regarding formations of commissions of inquiry under 1952 Act would be very heavy and cumbersome.
Many enquiry commissions are instituted by the centre or government to probe various scams, scandals and riots among other issues which consumes substantial public resouces. Activists have lamented the fact that the reports of these commissions are usually ending in the dust. The government should, at least for future, start disclosing the details on their website under section 4.
