The reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that during past two and half years the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) of Madurai has registered the highest number of neo-natal and infant deaths in Tamil Nadu among all the 22

,000 admissions in GRH. Out of these 14,000 neo-natal and infant deaths were reported in all the government hospitals each year. Among the total deaths, nearly 2,000 were reported from the GRH only.
The data provided in the reply shows that a total of 78,230 pregnant women and infants were admitted in the GRH during the said period and the total number of deaths recorded was 6,650 which included 2,919 neonatal and 3,734 infant deaths. The reply indicates that 153 babies die every month in GRH.
Former Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine has said that this might be because of poor implementation of Maternity Benefit Scheme which looks to provide financial assistance to take care of the nutrition provided to the infants.
