Complaint filed against PWD for illegal tree cutting defying tribunal’s order
21 Apr, 2013There was a complaint filed in the National Green Tribunal against the illegal felling of trees in Vasant Kunj area of Delhi by the Public Works Department (PWD) for its road widening project. During the hearing before the tribunal, the Delhi government accepted that the department had starting cutting trees without mandatory permission. The tribunal had ordered an interim stay on the work and had warned the government against further felling of trees till the next date of the hearing.
However, the residents of the area have again lodged complaint against the PWD with the police and the forest department alleging that the PWD officials were found cutting two of the trees defying the tribunal’s order.
The complaint also gives the reference of a reply to an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act which says that the forest department had not given any permission to cut the trees and that it had taken cognizance of the offence and had lodged a police complaint. The complainant has sought action against the culprits for the contempt of the tribunal’s order.
