Change in modes of payment of RTI fee sought
23 Mar, 2012The RTI Act grants the power for fixing the quantum and mode of payment of fee payable under the RTI Act to the “competent authority” or the “appropriate authority” as defined under the section 2.
Various authorities have fixed modes such as cash, DD, cheque and money order and postal order the permissible modes for the payment of fees. However, the Tamilnadu state does not recognise postal order as a permissible mode of payment. There have been requests for making the postal order a valid instrument for payment of fees under the RTI Act as it is a very easy and convenient way. However, the Tamilnadu state government has rejected the demand of Right to Information Act activists to incorporate postal orders as one of the modes of payment of application fee and further fee under the RTI. The situation is similar in many other states where the Fee rules need amendment.
