Bhopal flogged by child beggars
8 Nov, 2012An application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act was filed by a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Bhopal, Hifazat, seeking the data related to child beggars in the city. It was revealed that the departments of social justice and women and child development didn’t have any data related to them.
Thereafter the NGO conducted a survey for the same and found that there are around 2000 child beggars in Bhopal. Oxfam, an international confederation of 17 organizations focusing on poverty in more than 90 countries, had reached to similar conclusion in an earlier survey.
Rekha Shridhar, coordinator of the organization said that there are professional gangs in the city responsible for running begging rackets. Readers in most cities might have noticed a similar situation of children begging around for even in remote parts. Is the future of the country to be left seeking alms?
