AP Legislative Assembly in a fix as 60 % MLAs have not submitted asset details
22 Feb, 2013
An application was filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking the details of the assets and liabilities of the members of legislative assembly (MLAs) of Andhra Pradesh. The legislature secretariat has not sent a proper reply as yet because most of the legislators are yet to declare their assets.
The Rules of Procedure and conduct of Business of the Andhra Pradesh Legislature requires that within 30 days of taking oath, every legislator should declare his/her assets and liabilities to the Speaker. After that, they only need to go for asset declaration if any change occurs in their asset or liabilities. These declarations are treated as public documents and can be accessed through right to information.
The legislature secretariat stated that reminders had been sent to the MLAs to submit the asset details repeatedly by the Committee on Ethics but less than 60% of legislators have responded to the reminders.
