Amity University, Manesar is a public authority under RTI Act: SIC
12 Aug, 2013
An application was filed with the Amity University under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking to get information about the number of Non-resident Indian (NRI) students at its Manesar branch and the details about their security deposits. As the university declined to provide the information, the applicant filed a complaint with the Haryana State Information Commission (SIC).
The state information commission (SIC) found during the hearing that the university was constituted under an act passed by the state legislative assembly. It also cited a 2012 Punjab SIC decision declaring a private university in Chandigarh as public authority.
Hence, it held in the order that the university is a public authority and is required to furnish information under the RTI Act. The SIC has ordered the university authorities to appoint a public information officer and a first appellate authority within a month.
