Age norms being violated in appointment of principals – RTI reply
3 Mar, 2013The reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that many schools in Mumbai have violated Section 3 (I) of the Maharashtra Employees of Private Schools (MEPS) (Conditions of Service) Regulation Act, 1977 which states that an employee of a private school must retire after completion of 58 years.
The reply provided by the education department shows that age of the principal of Cathedral and John Connon School is 66 and that of the principal of Activity High School is 64. The data also shows that principal of Diamond Jubilee High School is 59 years old while three teachers at Bombay Scottish High School continue in service despite having passed retirement age.
The applicant has filed complaint against the schools with the school education department and has also written to the school education minister and director of school education. Following the complaint, the department is said to be on the on the path of issuing notices to the concerned schools for violating the state retirement age regulations.
The schools have said that as they are unaided, private schools, the Maharashtra Employees of Private Schools (MEPS) (Conditions of Service) Regulation Act, 1977 doesn’t apply to them.
