Adarsh Commission costs Rs. 7.04 crores to the exchequer
2 Nov, 2013
The Government of Maharashtra has incurred expenditure to the tune of Rs 7.04 crores for the functioning of the Adarsh Commission, constituted three years back to look into the abnormalities reported in respect of the multi-crore housing society. The General Adiministration Department of the state of Maharashtra has provided the information in response to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act by activist Anil Galgali.
The commission was constituted under the chairmanship of Justice (Retired) J. A. Patil with Chief Secretary (Retired) P. Subramanyam and 14 others as staff member on January 8, 2011 and it submitted its final report on April 18, 2013.
The main heads of expenditure (grossly) as revealed by the reply are:
1) Electricity & telephone bill of Rs 7.99 Lakhs
2) Construction, renovation etc of the commissions offices for Rs 1.01 Crore
3) Salary paid to staffs for Rs 1.88 Crore
4) Paid to senior counsels & lawyers Rs 3.96 Crore
Though the government is one unit, separate counsels were appointed to represent the different departments which appears to be the primary reason for the raising of the bill which activists have called as wastage of exchequer’s money. Further, a bill of Rs 1crore submitted by the counsel of Urban Development Department remains unpaid.
