24 railway stations don't have more than one lavatory or urinal facility for women
25 Feb, 2013An application was filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking to get the details about the lavatory and urinal facilities provided for women at different stations of suburban rail system of Mumbai.
The reply to the application has revealed a huge disparity between the facilities provided for men and those provided for women on suburban network of Western Railway as well as on the three suburban lines on Central Railway.
The data provided in the reply states that only four out of 38 toilet/urinal facilities at Andheri were for women. Similarly at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), out of 83 facilities, only 10 were for women including two urinals.
The reply also shows that as many as 24 stations don’t have more than one one lavatory or urinal facility for women commuters. Even extremely busy stations like Bandra and Malad have only one toilet each for women. Borivli, according to the reply, is the only station in entire suburban railways that has toilet facilities for women in double digits.
